February 13, 2023July 16, 2023 Solving Your Own Problems “Solving Your Own Problems” is a story about a wealthy man who has been praying to God every night to help him with his problems. He would say, “God, please do one favor for me, at least one favor, and I have been asking this my whole life.” He would ask God to do something for him. As far as I am aware, I am the most unhappy man on the planet. Why have you added so many problems to my life? I’m willing to exchange my problems with someone else. I don’t want bliss. Why don’t you give me just one chance to exchange my worries with someone else? This is very little!” Despite his repeated pleas, he feels like he’s never been able to find relief from his struggles. He saw God in a dream one night. “Gather all your miseries into bags and bring them to the temple hall,” said a heavenly voice from above. As a result, everyone in town brings their miseries to the hall in large bags. This man has an enormous: So now is the time! It looks like great things are coming! He dashes in with his package. He discovers that others are also racing along the way. When he gets to the hallway, he starts to feel very afraid because he sees other people carrying larger bags than his own. People he had always seen smiling, dressed in pretty clothes, and always saying nice things to each other are now carrying larger bags! He says, “Let us see what happens,” despite feeling a little unsure about whether to go or not because he has been praying about it all his life. They proceed down the hall. “Put your bags around the hall,” the voice instructs. The voice repeats, “Now you can choose any bundle you like,” as they place their bags. And then the greatest miracle occurs: Everyone hastily grabs their bags! This man also rushes so quickly toward his bag out of fear that he will lose it if someone else chooses it. They are all content as they carry their bags back to their homes, relieved that everyone has chosen their own bags. Because “Who knows what is in the other’s bags?” even the man who prayed for his entire life to exchange his miseries is content. We are at least aware of our own issues.
