November 14, 2022July 16, 2023 Story of Dussehra – Festival of Success – Vijaya Dashami Vijaya Dashami/ Dussehra is one of the major festivals celebrated in India. This festival is being celebrated for years as the sign of Victory of good over evil. Hindus in Bharat celebrate this festival in the lunar month of Ashvayuja, which falls in October. Story of Vijaya Dashami & Significance Long ago, There was a demon called Mahishasura. Mahisha means Bison/ Buffalo. Mahishasura was given this name as he was born in the form of Mahisha. With his Demon Powers, He desired to take control of the three worlds in the Universe. He began praying for Brahma to acquire a boon for his desire fulfillment. He has meditated for years inspite of the Sun, Rain, Hunger & Thirst which made Brahma appear before Mahishasura and give a boon to him. Mahishasura asked, “No man in this universe can be able to kill me.” Brahma accepted this and gave the boon to Mahishasura. He asked this as he never thought of a woman who can kill or fight with him. After obtaining the boon, This demon started torturing everyone in the universe. Even Brahma, Vishnu & Maheswara were not able to do anything because of the boon he had. So, they thought of finding a way to defeat Mahishasura. As there was a chance for a woman to kill the demon, Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheswara combined their forces together and created a woman; who was so powerful to defeat Mahishasura and named her Goddess Durga. They gifted their weapons to her who was ready to fight with Mahishasura with 18 hands. Vishnu had given his Sudharshana Chakra. Siva had given his Trishul. Indra has gifted his Vajrayudha to Durga Matha. With all such powerful weapons, Goddess Durga started on a Lion and started the battle against Mahishasura. He was also confident to win the battle and attacked Goddess Durga with many soldiers. But Durga & Lion had turned his army into pieces. After the fierce battle of 9 days, Goddess Durga finally killed Mahishasura. All Gods celebrated it as a festival on the death of the demon which is now continued by us as Vijaya Dasami. We celebrate the 9 days as Navratri and as the victory was achieved on the 10th day, It is known as Vijaya Dashami/ Dussehra. According to Ramayana It is also believed that Rama had killed Ravana on this day during his period according to Ramayana. It is told as Ram Leala which explains the war between Rama & Ravana. According to Mahabharata Pandavas had completed their Agnathavasa on Vijaya Dashami. They took their weapons back which they kept on the tree named “Sami Vriksha”. All over India This festival is celebrated in various ways all over India. The idols of Goddess Durga are placed and worshiped for welcoming success in everyone’s lives. People also worship Sami Vriksha having faith in the story of Mahabharata. Everyone gets blessings from each other by getting together and celebrating Vijaya Dasami happily! On all the days of Navratri including Vijaya Dasami, People worship Sami Vriksha chanting a mantra: “శమీ శమయతే పాపం, శమీ శతృ వినాశనీ అర్జునస్య ధనుర్ధారీ, రామస్య ప్రియదర్శినీ” Chant this mantra while doing Pradakshina to Sami Vriksha this year and have all the success in your life.
