The Fox and Two Friends

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Once upon a time, Toto, the tortoise, and Heru, the rabbit, lived in a jungle. Toto was very calm, whereas Heru was very naughty. Toto used to like resting all day, but Heru was the opposite.

For the whole day, Toto used to go out and play. Heru was a rabbit and liked to play much more than Toto. Heru and Toto were very good friends and they lived together. They both loved each other very much and always helped each other whenever they were in need. Heru used to get food for Toto when Toto remained ill, and Toto did the same for Heru. They never quarreled among themselves.

One day, Heru and Toto were setout for their evening walk, and they went to a riverside. While they were walking along the river, they met a crazy fox. Heru and Toto always behaved well with everyone. As usual, they went upto the fox and behaved very kindly and politely with him.

The fox said, “Hello! My name is Ghinu. Where do you live?” Hero replied, “We both are friends, and we live together in a hole.” Ghinu, the clever fox, became determined to break their friendship as he got jealous of them. He asked them, “Do you know about the race which will be held in our jungle among all animals tomorrow?”

Heru and Toto were astonished and replied, “No.”

Ghinu said there would be a race among the animals, and the King of the jungle will reward the winner with delicious fruits and food. Suddenly, Ghinu laughed and said, “Toto can’t win the race as he is very small and slow.”

Heru laughed at the comment and said, “Yes! Toto can’t win the race.” Hearing this, Toto felt sad. He didn’t expect this from his very own friend Heru. Feeling insulted and in rebellion, he replied, “I can definitely win the race. No one can make me lose.”

Heru again laughed and said, “What? Will you win? NO WAY. I BET.” They began to quarrel among themselves, and meanwhile, Ghinu left the place.

Ghinu said to himself, “This is what I wanted. They are quarreling, hahaha”.

Ghinu went to the King of the jungle and told him to arrange a false race between them. The King of the jungle and the fox planned that they both would eat each on that day.

The next day, both Heru and Toto went to the race site. They didn’t talk to each other anymore. There was a long race track from the riverside to the cave of the King. Without any delay, Ghinu said, “Let’s start?” Toto asked, “where are the others?”

Ghinu replied, “nobody came to the race. They were scared of the King of the jungle.”

Heru said, “Leave them and let’s start.” They took their positions and started the race on a whistle for Ghinu. Toto was small and slow. He walked slowly, but Heru ran and went far within seconds as he was a rabbit and could hop and jump too far.

Heru almost reached the end line within 30 minutes and looked back but couldn’t even see Toto. He said, “poor toto! Let me sleep and take a nap for an hour.” He went under a tree and sat to take a nap.

Meanwhile, Toto became disheartened and thought that Heru had already been the winner as it was half an hour already, but he didn’t lose hope and kept his confidence level high. He slowly came within an honor and found Heru sleeping. Toto smiled and said, “Poor Heru, now I will be the winner.”

Toto slowly walked to the end line where Ghinu was waiting and became the winner. Heru woke up and saw Toto standing there with fruits and food. Heru got jealous and cried. When the fox tried to attack them, they both fled away.

In the end, when both safely reached their hole, Heru apologized to Toto for teasing him.
