The Warrior Brothers: Building An Empire

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Tummy and Hummy were warrior brothers. The brothers wanted to establish their own safe haven for people to live in. They gathered a band of young fellows and prepared them for fighting. In India, they resided in a hideaway in the forest on the banks of the Tungabhadra River.

The brothers were hunting one day. Vicious dogs accompanied them. They rode on after crossing the river. A few terrified rabbits fled from the bushes. The two brothers were close behind on their horses as the dogs ran after them. The pursuit was lengthy. The rabbits were fleeing in fear. The canines were making up for the lost time.

The rabbits abruptly and swiftly turned to face the dogs. The barking dogs retreated, taken aback by the defiance display. Hummy called the dogs back. The rabbits left as the dogs turned back. Hummy surveyed the area. They were on the Tungabhadra’s opposite side. It was a rough land. The sun was bursting overhead.

“Strange! I’ve never seen a challenge between dogs and rabbits before!” Tummy said.

A quiet voice said, “Even rabbits fight; that’s the quality of this land.”

The two brothers turned when they heard a stranger speaking. A holy man was approaching them, they observed. He was a symbol of tranquility. His eyes were simultaneously blazingly bright.

At his feet, the brothers collapsed.

Hummy said, “You must be Vidyaranya, the famous sage of Sringeri.”

The saint smiled and said, “And you are the brothers struggling to build a kingdom – Hummy and Tummy.” The brothers were aware that Vidyaranya was performing penance on the Tungabhadra’s banks. Nobody knew precisely where he was. And there he was, bestowing his blessings upon them!

“Hundreds of kingdoms exist. Tell me, how will your kingdom differ from mine? Vidyaranya asked.

Hummy spoke slowly and carefully, “Our kingdom will have a strong foundation,” weighing each word. “Dharma’s foundation is justice and truth.”

“I’m glad you said it,” Vidyaranya grinned. “Justice and truth. Harmony and thriving. You will establish an empire that will symbolize the triumph of justice and truth. Vinaygarh is its name. Construct your capital at a place that knows no fear, where even hares are bold!”

They bowed.

On the banks of the Tungabhadra, Vinaygarh soon became a powerful empire with Sampi as its capital.

Moral of The Warrior Brothers: Building an Empire Story

The foundation of a successful kingdom lies in justice and truth. Courage and boldness can come from unexpected sources.
