Appreciation of Hard Work

A young man completed his post-graduation with a good percentage. After his studies, he went to apply for a managerial role in a famous company. He cleared the first interview and moved to the last round.

The Director of the company took his last interview and made the decision. During the interview, he considered the excellent academic achievements of the young man from his schooling to post-graduation.

The Director asked the young man if he had obtained any scholarships in school, and the young man replied, “none.” The Director asked the next question, “Was it your father who paid for your school fees?” The young man answered that his father had expired when he was one year old. His mother worked hard and paid for his school fees.

The Director questioned, “Where did your mother work?” The young man replied that his mother worked as a clothes cleaner. The Director requested the young man to show his hands upon hearing that. The young man showed both his hands, which were smooth and perfect.

The Director asked, “Have you ever assisted your mother in washing the clothes before?” The young man answered, “No, I had not. My mother wanted me to study always and read more books. Also, my mother can wash clothes quicker than me”.

The Director requested the young man, “When you go home today, go and clean your mother’s hands, and then meet me tomorrow morning.”

The young man felt that his chance of getting the job was high. When he went home, he happily pleaded with his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange and happy, but with mixed feelings, she showed her hands to her son.

The young man cleaned his mother’s hands slowly. He cried as he did that. It was the first time he saw his mother’s hands wrinkly. There were several bruises on her hands. A few bruises were so painful that his mother shivered when the young man cleaned them with water.

The young man realized that it was this pair of hands that washed the clothes every day to pay the school fee for him. The bruises on the mother’s hands were the price she had to pay for his graduation, academic excellence, and future.

After cleaning his mother’s hands, the young man calmly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother. The mother and son talked for a very long time that night. The next day, the young man went to the Director’s office as he was asked to.

The Director noticed the tears in the eyes of the young man and asked, “Can you tell me what you did and learned yesterday in your home?” The young man answered that he had cleaned his mother’s hands and washed all the remaining clothes.

The Director asked, “please let me know your feelings.” The young man said, “Firstly, Now, I know what is appreciation. Without my mother, there would not be a successful me today. Secondly, By working together and helping my mother, I realized how tough it is to get something done. Lastly, I have come to appreciate the importance and value of family relationships”.

The Director said that he was looking for the same to be his manager. He wants to recruit a person who can appreciate or value the help of others. A person who understands the sufferings of others to get things done. A person who would not consider money as his only goal in life. He confirmed the job appointment saying, “You are hired.”

Later, the young man worked very hard and received the respect of his subordinates. Every employee under him worked hard with dedication and as a team. The performance of the company was boosted tremendously.

If an individual does not understand and experience the difficulty it takes to earn the comfort provided by their loved ones; then they will never value it. The most critical thing is to experience the difficulty and learn to appreciate hard work behind all the given comfort.
