Kali Ma’s Gift To Tenali Raman

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Tenali Raman had a particularly bad cold. He continued to blow his nose and wipe it. His eyes filled with tears, and his nose turned red. He was presented with a pot of boiling water by his wife. She put a few spices into it. The cold gradually subsided as Raman inhaled the steam. Raman felt better.

Raman was relieved to get over the cold for a reason. He wanted to pray that evening at the Kali temple on the outskirts of the city. For gold, ask Kali Ma. As he headed toward the temple, his wife advised him, “Don’t make a joke and leave empty-handed.”

When he got to the temple, it was pretty dark. The temple was empty of people. In front of the idol of Kali Ma, a lamp was lit. Raman fell to the ground and sat down before the idol of the goddess. He started praying to Mother Kali with his eyes closed. Kali Ma appeared before him with a thousand heads and a thousand pairs of arms because of his devotion.

When Raman saw Mother Kali in all her splendor, he was mesmerized. With awe, he looked at her from left to right and left to right. He then burst into laughter.

When she saw her devotee laughing at her, Mother Kali was not amused. She grinned and furrowed her brows. Raman begged her to forgive him, folded his hands in salutation, and controlled his laughter.

Mother Kali wanted to know what made Raman laugh at this point.

Raman told, “This morning, I had a cold.” Throughout the day, I blew and wiped my nose and became exhausted. At the point when I see you now with your thousand appearances….”

“Indeed, go on, complete your clarification,” said Kali Ma fretfully.

“When I see you with your thousand faces, I wonder what will happen if you ever get a cold. You won’t look good blowing your thousand noses, won’t you?,” Raman said this as he laughed once more.

Mother Kali laughed when she realized the joke, even though she was initially annoyed.

Kali Ma stated, “I want to punish you Raman for being naughty.” But I forgive you because you made me laugh. It’s a blessing that you can always make people laugh with your wit.

However, Raman desired more. The Mother gave Raman a piece of silken cloth as if she could read his mind.

Raman was sure Kali Ma was offering him supernatural material to yield wealth. But he decided to ask Kali Ma to make sure.

“Mother, what’s this for?” asked Raman. He hoped that each morning the cloth would produce a few gold coins.

Kali Ma laughed and said, “To blow your nose, you silly, when you catch a cold next time.”

Mother Kali vanished the following instant. Raman left the temple with her laughter still ringing in his ears. He sneezed and took a whiff of air. He quickly took the cloth that Mother Kali had given him and blew his nose with it. As he headed home, he truly thought Kali Ma was watching him and snickering. He laughed out loud at this thought.

Moral of Kali Ma’s Gift To Tenali Raman Story

Wit and humor can help us to navigate difficult situations and win forgiveness. Even deities can appreciate a good joke and forgive those who make them. However, it’s essential to be respectful and mindful of our actions, especially when in the presence of higher beings.
