But one brave woman’s curiosity led her to discover the truth behind the mysterious creature. Full Story The village at the hilltop’s base was quiet. Honesty and hard work were the norms. The village chief was a man who was kind and fair. The villager’s alarm went off one morning when they heard a bell. They were aware that it was not the usual temple bell. This was unique. It sounded frightful. The sound awoke a child, who began to cry. The mother embraced her child and prayed for protection. They were unaware of the person chiming in the bell. However, they knew for sure that the sound came from the hills. A wise old man said that a demon had visited the hills. A cowherd claimed to have seen large footprints. He stated, “No man can leave such enormous footprints. It must be a giant’s footprint.” “Why does he ring the bell?” A tiny urchin inquired. He was told to stop talking. However, a villager had a ready response. I’ve heard of giants who wore enormous bells on their ears! An intelligent villager explained, “The bells swing, making those clanging sounds as they walk.” The image of a giant or group of giants with enormous bells dangling from their ears was now visible to the villagers. The giants were referred to as Ghantakarnas or the Bell Demons. They ceased their pursuit of the hillside. Nagamma, who resided in a hut on the village’s outskirts, became curious. She set out for the hills one morning. She moved stealthily because she was cautious. Then, she heard the sound of the bell. She ran to the nearest tree out of fear. She could see far away from the tree’s peak. The sight of a group of monkeys playing surprised her. They were using a huge bell to play! Nagamma reasoned that the monkeys must have discovered the bell in the old temple on top of the hill. She moved toward her village after descending from the tree. The following day, she returned with a basket full of bananas. The monkeys pursued her after spotting her carrying bananas. She fled for safety after dropping the basket. While picking up a banana, the bell-ringing monkey dropped the bell. The bananas were being consumed by the monkeys. Nagamma quickly left after picking up the bell, which they barely noticed. When he got to the village square, Nagamma rang the bell. The Bell Demon’s arrival in the village initially frightened the locals. Then they realized Nagamma was ringing the bell. They surrounded her. She explained to them how she drove the Bell Demon away and stole his bell. The locals laughed heartily. They also felt relieved that they were safe and thanked Nagamma for that.
