Story of A Fortune Teller

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

A long time ago, a man lived in a small village in Buddhapur. The man believed that he could predict the future just by looking at the stars. He used to call himself to be a famous fortune teller and spent all of his time gazing at the night sky. He always used to shout and announce what a real fortune teller he was.

Everything he says is true, and everything he says will happen in the future, surely for one day. He always used to be busy worrying about the upcoming days of the future. The villagers of Buddhapur often visited him, being eager to know what their future held for them.

One fine evening, as he was walking along the open road outside the village right after crossing through the woods, his eyes were fixed on the stars. As per his studies, he realizes that the end of the world is near. Realizing this, he got engaged and lost in his deep thoughts, thinking about what would happen in the future. He kept walking by, gazing at the stars without looking down even for once.

Suddenly, he slipped down into a huge ditch by the road, which was full of clay, mud, and water. Slowly, as he fell down, he started to sink in the muddy water and was trying very hard to claw at the slippery sides of the big hole, but he failed in his effort to climb out. He was unable to
crawl out.

Fearing and being scared of death, he started screaming for help. “Help me! Help me! I’m dying,” he cried. His cries for help soon caught the villagers’ attention and brought them running to the spot.

One of the villagers among the crowd arranged for a branch of a tree and put it forward near him to help him to come out of the big ditch of mud.

He said, “Take, try to hold this branch. Then slowly try to climb up out of the sticky clay. Do not rush in a hurry”. He tried his best but failed. Slowly, as he tried for some more time, he succeeded and finally came out of it.

As he came out of the ditch, he was all wet and wrapped in a layer of mud. One of the villagers angrily shouted at him, “You pretend to read the fortune by gazing at the stars, and yet you fail to see what is at your feet! You failed to predict that you would slip down into a big ditch and may lose your life. This was just a lesson to teach you to pay attention to the present and not to think of the future every time. The future can take care of itself as God is there to look after.”

“What’s the use of it to look at stars and predict the future days if you can’t pay attention to what is here on this earth?” said another!

They left then.
