The Curse of Ramaya

The Curse of Ramaya

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

There was a Kingdom in Vijayanagara. There lived a man whose name was Ramaya. There was a rumor spread in the kingdom. Everyone was discussing the rumor “the curse of Ramaya” that if any of the kingdom’s citizens saw Ramaya in the morning, they would be cursed forever. They will also be unable to eat the whole day after seeing Ramaya.

This rumor spread like a piece of news, and the King got to hear this from one of the members of his courtyard. Hearing this, the King wanted to examine it for himself.

The King immediately ordered the guards to make arrangements for Ramaya and to call him to the courtyard. The guards made all the necessary arrangements for Ramaya and set up a room next to the King instead of the courtyard.

Ramaya was invited by the King and was said to stay that night in his kingdom.

The next morning when the sun shone brightly in the sky, the King walked to Ramaya’s room so that he could look at him first in the morning before seeing anybody else and testing this rumor.

Suddenly, the curse happened at lunchtime when the King went to sit for his lunch. The King spotted a fly in his meal and asked the cook to take it away and to prepare a new lunch for him immediately.

But unfortunately, the King had lost his appetite by the time lunch was served again. After a few seconds, he realized that the rumor had come true and was indeed true to what people say about Ramaya.

Seeing Ramaya’s face first thing in the morning did cause people to be cursed and cannot have food for the whole day. He didn’t want this to continue for his people, so the King demanded that Ramaya should be hanged the next day without any delay.

Ramaya’s wife gets tensed and immediately goes to Tenali Raman for help as she doesn’t want to lose her husband. Nobody wants to lose their loved ones. She shared every detail with Tenali Raman, and he decided to go to Ramaya.

The next day was the day when Ramaya was to be hanged. Tenali goes to him and whispers something into his ear just before he is to be taken to be hanged.

On the same day, the guards ask Ramaya if he has any last wish before being hanged to death. Ramaya said, “I want to give the King a note that he must read before hanging me.” He gave the note to the guards, who immediately delivered it to the King.

The notes carried the words that Tenali Raman had whispered. ‘If by seeing Ramaya’s face, someone can lose their appetite; then a person who sees the King’s face first thing in the morning is destined to lose his life. Therefore, Who is more cursed? Ramaya or the King?’

This question shattered the King and canceled Ramaya’s Hanging.
