February 12, 2023July 16, 2023 The Honest Baker: Story of Integrity in Business “The Honest Baker” is a short story about Milly, who was a baker in a small town. She has loved to bake since her college days and decided to open a bakery in the town right after completing her studies. Milly loved eating cakes and baking. She baked for her family too. She started her small business and grew fast. Today, Milly is a famous baker in her town. Everybody knows Milly as the baker in the town who delivers cute, delicious cakes which are finger-licking in taste and eye-catching in appearance. Milly baked every cake with all her love. She never compromised while baking. She put everything in her cake to make it delicious and look good and made sure that her customers loved the taste. The customer’s reviews were very much valuable for Milly. One day, she got a huge bulk order for making a cake. She fulfilled the customer’s criteria successfully and delivered it to their house within the time given. Days passed away, and Milly continued her bakery. But one day, suddenly, the price of things rose. As a result, everything became high in price, the prices of creme, milk, butter, wheat, and eggs. Everything had become too much costlier. Milly was an honest person. She still managed with her bank balance and income to buy every stuff needed to bake. Milly was not able to increase the rates of her cake. She kept selling them at the same rates. As a result, Milly had got a low bank balance, and her income decreased. Half of her money went into buying stuff for baking, and she got less in return. One of Milly’s friends suggested that she should use less stuff in her baking process. She gave her the idea to use less cream and less milk and also to give less amount of cake. She suggested that she should sell a 1-pound cake but put 700 pounds of material in it. Milly was told that no one’s going to check or weigh a cake, so she should make fools of her customers when she suffered a significant loss in her business. “After all, business is all about gaining money and making customers a fool.” But Milly disagrees. She didn’t like the idea and refused to do it. Milly kept giving the right amount of material to her customers, and as a result, despite tough days of loss, the number of her customers increased. She had more customers, and after a few days, she made a new price chart where she increased the rates. She called her friend and said that today she gained customers instead of losing because, despite everything, she kept her cakes up to the mark and continued to give good quality, for which her customers used to call her the best baker. If she had cheated the way she was told to, she would have lost her customers, and one day, her bakery shop would have been closed. Thankfully, Milly continued her business by serving right to her customers instead of cheating on them.
