The Quarrel Between Two Mothers

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Two women were fighting over a young child once in a village. The wise village head was consulted on the matter.

“He is my child,” said the first woman. Please instruct her to ignore him. “No, he is mine,” a different woman cried. The wise man asked the first woman, “What do you have to say?”

“He is my child,” she replied. While bathing in the river, I left my son on the bank. My child was carried by this woman as she fled. I quickly changed and ran after her.

The village head asked another woman to give her side of the story.

She declared, “She lies. He is my only child, and I took a dip in the river. She arrived there, grabbed my child, and then fled. I was fortunate enough to catch her. “Villagers who were watching and weren’t sure whom to believe.

The wise man stood up and, using a twig, drew a line on the ground. He then asked them to stand on either side of the line, placing the child in the middle.

After that, he instructed one of the women to hold the child in her left hand and the other in his right hand.

Then he said, “Now, pay close attention.” The child needs to be pulled to your side by both of you. Whoever carries the child over to her side is the child’s owner.

Both women held the child, and the first woman began vigorously pulling him to her side. Another woman took that child’s hand and said, “I can’t do this, as the child cried in pain. Please let her have a child.” But, the first woman harshly pulled the child and proudly exclaimed, “He is my child,” while the other woman wept heavily.

The village head said, “Wait!”

He asked the villagers, “My dear village men, what’s your opinion? What do you think? Who loves the child more?” before turning to them. “Whoever let the child go or the one pulled the child to her side?”

Villagers did not respond. According to the village head, “Only a mother can have a tender heart for her child,” the infant was taken from the first woman and given to the other. She let go of his hand because she couldn’t bear the child’s suffering.

The real mother gave her child a big hug and thanked the village head. The child lifter was punished for her actions.
