January 28, 2023July 16, 2023 The Power of Education: A Girl’s Fight for Her Dreams Falak was a young girl who had a fantasy about a world where she could be happy and fulfilled. But, her family took away her dreams. They treated her badly when she wanted to leave without covering her face with the burqa. She began fighting for her rights after her family made her life so suffocating. Falak fought with her uncle and exclaimed, “Let me live in my own way,” when she was denied access to school. “Nobody ought to hinder my desire to attend school.” She frequently attended school without informing anyone. She used to wait outside the school and read namaz while the other children of her age were sleeping at 4 a.m. But her uncle always bet on her, so he took her home and scolded her. Her parents then told her that only Moulwi could teach and get her used to the outside world. When she was taught Islamic verses by the moulwi, she frequently questioned their applicability when interacting with the outside world. The Moulwi would then assert that her home was the most sacred and secure place on earth. Falak was very insistent, and one day she asked the moulwi if she could get a formal education at the school. The moulwi told her not to ask questions like that. The Moulwi asked Falak’s father, who was reading the newspaper, to help her understand the significance of the Quran and its teachings when she asked more questions. Falak’s father sat next to her and asked her to focus on what Moulwi was saying. She said, “I am unwilling to study so much of heavenly philosophy,” which Falak’s father refuted. “I wish to attend school. Request that moulwi uncle stops telling me stories I don’t care about.” She was slapped by her father, who pleaded with her to follow Islam. She said she would be going to school and picked up her bag and notebook, but her uncle caught her, tied her up with a rope, and asked her to apologize for her lack of discipline. Falak began to weep and yell that she had done nothing wrong because she was only attending school, and the Quran lessons seemed dull. She broke down in tears and tried to convince her father and uncle to let go of the rope so she could get to school. The moulwi finally pleaded with her father to let her go, fearing that Allah would not forgive them for punishing a young girl who was unaware of the outside world. She also pleaded with them to send her to school so that her uncle and father could ask Allah to forgive them for their sins.
